Highland Beach

Highland Beach is a beautiful sliver of paradise located in South Palm Beach County sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean on the East side and the Intracoastal Waterway on the West Side.  There is only one commercial property in town which is the Delray Sands Resort, a luxury hotel and restaurant with expansive views of the ocean. All other properties are either city buildings or residential housing, the majority of which are condos.

Most residents live here part time during the Winter months and return home when the Florida temperatures return to the 80’s.  The population of Highland Beach consists of about 80% seniors and 20% working persons or self -employed.  One can find many of these senior citizens walking down the beautiful tree lined side walk that parallels the 1.1 mile stretch of A1A, the main street of Highland Beach.

The Town provides general municipal services such as police protection and a library, as well as water and wastewater utility service. The Town also provides, through contract, fire protection, code enforcement, building inspection, solid waste, and postal services. This municipal center is within walking distance to most of residents and is a pleasure to visit.

When visiting the townhall one really experiences a “small town” feeling.  The library is located directly on the intracoastal where you can sink into an overstuffed chair and read a good book while enjoying the views.  The bulletin board is flush with notices of local events and invitations.  No need to dread a visit to a crowded post office.  When you enter this post office, you will most likely be the only customer and the postwoman will probably know you by name.  It’s no wonder they call Highland Beach “Mayberry on the ocean”!
